Starting point for the text is to find out why I am so fascinated by the string quartet phenomenon; four musicians who, without someone being the boss, seem to form one perfectly functioning instrument. Or, as Goethe puts it: “A conversation between four highly civilized gentlemen”. The text is ordered along the following lines: the history of the string quartet, violin makers, playing music in a string quartet, my personal fascination, Ravel’s Quatuor à cordes.
